Prepare for HNTAS and future heat network regulation
The Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme, or HNTAS, is the UK Government’s proposed mandatory compliance framework for heat networks. It is planned to launch from 2027 and will require heat network operators to meet minimum technical standards and demonstrate compliance through independent assessment and certification.
Existing networks are expected to follow a phased milestone pathway, giving operators time to assess performance, address gaps and plan improvement works.
What this means for existing networks
Early HNTAS milestones are expected to focus on minimum performance and reliability thresholds, metering and monitoring, KPI reporting and evidence of operational performance. Later milestones are expected to extend obligations across areas such as plant efficiency, water quality, consumer connections and full certification.
